CHICAGO!

me by the Beautiful Lake Michigan

So I visited K in Chicago this weekend. It was crazy fun and I'm soooo exhausted.

Us in the BEAN
It was soooo cold

No one ever warned me how big Chicago was!  It's like three times the size of Boston.  But anyway, so much fun.

Falling Off the Vegan Train

This would possibly make an appropriate title for my autobiography.
Which is actually incredibly annoying.
To me.
I don't think anyone else actually cares.
I've pretty much been a vegetarian forever.  I have absolutely no problem not eating meat, but whenever I try to go 100% vegan and cut out eggs/dairy I always screw up a few weeks later.

Anyway, I'm feeling really unfocused to day. so I'm just gonna share a quick recipe:

Blueberry & Peanut Butter Smoothie

1/4 cup crushed ice

1 cup almond milk
(basically anything works like soy, rice etc... you can also use chocolate soy milk and make it a Chocolate Blueberry and Peanut butter Smoothie which is pretty damn amazing)

2 Tablespoons Peanut Butter
If you haven't tried Peanut Better brand, you need to.  It's basically like Peanut Butter, but it has a different texture.  It's less solid, which is kind of messy for eating straight out of the jar, but it makes for good smoothie material.

Blueberries- any amount
I go for 1-2 handfuls, cuz I make a pretty small smoothie.

Blend, and
TADA

It's delicious. I swear.  Peanut Butter and Blueberry is the new Peanut Butter and Banana.  Trust me

this looks funky, cause it was hand-blended.

FRECKLES

This heat wave will probably be the death of me.  One way or the other.  I have very, very pale skin. Summer coxing has basically turned me into one giant freckle.  But not in a good, oh- look- at- that- tan sort of way. Just in a very, very extremely freckled way.
I gotta say though, I'm kinda pleased.
Here's one for freckle pride!

Now if only we could work on accepting my intensely curly red hair we'd have something here.

until next time,
Stay cool,

letters to katie

letters to katie

So this is the new background/avatar I made for my Letters to Katie tumblr on polyvore.
Does anyone know a good site that has free collage-making programs?  I use polyvore a lot, but sometimes it's limiting. You can't import everything you want.

I don't know if it's really "get- able" but the short explanation is this:
A lot of people really use their shoes to  express their personalities.  The collage of shoes is to show that suicide affects people from all walks of life.  It's something we all have in common, and something that we, as a community need to fight.

Maybe I'm not fighting for world peace.
Maybe I don't believe I can end poverty or world hunger or AIDS.
But I believe I have unique experiences that make me an advocate for suicide prevention.  And if something I do protects just one life in just one tiny way, well then, I think that makes it more than worth it.

FEED Baseball Tee

FEED for Target Women's Baseball Tee -Birch

FEED for Target Women's Baseball Tee -Birch (see more raglan t shirts)

So I really love baseball tees.  They're usually light and airy and fantastic.  I was at target on Sunday and I almost bought this.  I talked myself out of it on the basis of how many baseball tees do I need.

But now I'm reconsidering. I think I might go back next weekend and get it.
There's really no such thing as too many baseball tees.
Or muscle shirts

(ps: are they still muscle t-shirts is you have spaghetti arms?)

I Hide in Libraries and Movie Theaters

Untitled #42

Ok, Maybe not all summer.
I do outdoor yoga sometimes.  I took my dog to for a walk and we swam in the lake this afternoon. But mostly, I am NOT a summer girl.  This probably has a lot to do with being a ginger.  Summer sun is way too much for transparent skin.  Even if that skin is covered in many, many freckles.  So sometimes, I gotta take cover.  Here's another kind of weird thing about me.  I hate wearing short sleeves and shorts.  I wish it was cold enough all the time for me to wear long sleeved shirts and pants. I think this is because, again, I'm pale and I'm kind of long legged/long armed so I feel like a little kid when I wear shorts.   Three quarter length sleeves are my favorite.  I do wear shorts in the summer.  My converse go with everything, and these shorts look super comfy.
Diet Coke is a must have.  Always. Movie theater OR library.  Sunglasses for the way there.  (Did you notice that these are crew sunglasses?)  Also, I really like Honeysuckle tinted Burts Bees Lip Balm.  Actually, I like any Burts Bees Lip Balm.   Or anything else, for that matter. I'm trying out Burts Bees acne solutions to see how that works.  I'll let you know

Murphy's Law of Coxing

Murphy's Law, while generally true and pertinent many times in life, takes on a whole new meaning as a coxswain.  Especially on days like today, when the crewniverse is conspiring against you. (Yup, I did make that word up, and yup, it means exactly what it sounds like. Crewniverse= crew universe. What? Like there's any other one?) Anyway, today we left 2 hours and fifteen minutes before practice started.  What should be a 20 minute drive took, oh, you know, a measly three hours.
Boston traffic is ridiculous.  I wish this boathouse was more convenient!   Basically, it is on the opposite side of the city from where I live this summer- literally complete opposite ends.  So anyway, I was a bit late, and I HATE being late.  Well, actually, I hate being late to practice or regattas or hangouts with friends. I've been known to show up to classes late on purpose so I wouldn't have to sit through the whole thing.
Ok.
Sue me.
Short attention span here, people.
Anyway, I have this terrible habit of scratching my neck when I get nervous, and I don't realize I'm doing it until I'm already caught in this mindless loop of anxious neck-scratching and if there's one thing that makes me nervous, it's not doing anything and that's exactly what you do in traffic, so by the time I got to practice (I was only about 10-15 min late) my neck was practically bleeding and I was kind of frazzled because, if you'll refer back to the previous sentence, inefficiency is probably my number one enemy and makes me cranky and nervous and it should not take 3 hours for a 20min drive people!
But that was just the beginning.
I hopped in the 4+ right as it was launching.  First, my bow seat could not move her foot stretchers so they were in the wrong place all practice. Then, I realized the wires were all tangled up so I couldn't sit comfortably.  While I was fixing those, I noticed
1: the magnet that goes under bow seat and tracks the stroke rating wasn't attached, so I had no idea how fast they were rowing
and
2: my head rest was about to fall out, because the bolts were loose.
I thought I had  a solution to both of these things.  I brought athletic tape with me, so bow seat used it to tape the magnet under her seat and I always have my adjustable wrench, so I turned around and tried to screw the headrest back into position.
No luck with either endeavor.  Even with the magnet taped in place, the coxbox still wasn't getting a reading.  And the bolts on the headrest?  Rusted in place.  A few minutes later, not only was my coxbox not timing the pieces or reading the stroke rates, it had given out ENTIRELY.  No one could hear me, even though I was basically yelling as loud as I could the entire practice.  I used the megaphone from the coaching launch for parts of the second half, but it was electronic, which means that if you're using it coxing in the wind, there's a terrible screeching  noise.  Not ideal.
On top of everything else, most of the boat were beginner rowers which meant that not being able to hear me left them confused and kind of panicked, even though considering how loud I was shouting, I think the rest of the world heard me.
Oh well.
At least coach was understanding that I was having a damn near impossible time what with the broken coxbox, the touchy megaphone, the novice rowers, and, oh yeah, did I mention the wicked crosswind? I guess that's the benefit of coxing masters teams over the summer.  God knows, my own coaches would have decapitated me within the first fifteen minutes of today's practice.

Ah well,
There's a lesson here somewhere.  And it's not Murphy's Law.
Although, lemme just restate that one: Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong, and all at the worst possible time, especially if you are a coxswain.

AND ROWERS SOMETIMES!!!! GAHHHHH
But no, gotta love 'em.
Like I said, coxing master's rowers is great.
I think the lesson here is actually you can't be prepared for everything and sometimes practice is just going to blow up in your face, so be flexible and roll with the punches.  Or something.

On an only slightly related side note, THIS:
This is from Row2k.
If anyone can figure out how to recreate it, they will literally be my hero.
I never have cake for my birthday, cause I don't really like it at all.  (I know, I'm weird.   Something about the texture) But a coxbox cake would literally maybe be the coolest thing ever.  Of course, Id probably still not eat it and just try to freeze it forever but hey, if I could figure out how ti make this, it'd be so worth it.
ah that's all
It's one am. I need to make myself go to bed... although honestly I am probably just going to look through rowing blogs.

ah, EMME, get a life!

Summer routines

Summer routines

Summer routines by emmier featuring h&m
So the story here is pretty simple.  Most of the times I leave the house in summer are to go to practice, or outdoor yoga, neither of which activities require makeup.  I've started wearing makeup more and more often, however, even if I'm just going to Panera's for lunch or walking the dog, or hitting up CVS (for more makeup?) but there's a reason behind this.  Mainly, my skin.
I had pretty good skin, up until, well... maybe my first year in college.  I only had a few serious breakouts in high school.  Now, while the majority of my face is clear, the sides of my cheeks have a pretty constant sprinkling of acne.
I've tried everything!!
I think I'm going to order Proactiv, but in the meant time, it means I'm wearing foundation.
I ran out of Clinique Acne Solutions (otherwise known as a miracle) so now I'm using Maybelline BB cream.  It covers up pretty well and has SPF, so sometimes that's all I wear on my face.  Other times I add bronzer, because I'm ghostly pale.  It has to be very, very light, or otherwise it looks awful.
I'm really into brown eyeshadow these days- this pack from H& M should nicely do the trick, but to be honest I'm using my mom's (hey, someone should and she never does!) which I think is Estee Lauder and is this nice shimmery brown-copper color.  I'm really into the grungy look it gives off.

I rarely wear eyeliner because of my supersensitive eyes, but I'm thinking of trying out just a tiny touch of white eyeliner on the bottom eyelid to open things up.  I'm also thinking about trying out dry shampoo, because people are always telling you not to wash curly hair as much but if I don't wash it daily it gets  really frizzed out.  Damned if you don't, damned if you do?
Lastly, clear mascara and lip balm with SPF.  I have strangely long eyelashes, and they will look totally, totally drag-queen fake if I wear mascara in brown so I have to wear clear.  And lip balm because, duh, my lips get chapped.  I think I have a pretty good summer routine down.  I can't wait for fall.  Partially because, as noted, I LOVE fall.  Partially because summer is murder on the skin/hair.  At least for me, anyway.

Summer Afternoons

My gorgeous pup and I had a pretty fun day. I did pilates after I woke up, then I took her for a walk and let her swim in the lake and un.  We came back, at lunch, and then played in the yard for hours. This is partially because I didn't want her lying on my bed before she was dried off, so I stayed outside with her.  I can't leave her alone outside right now, because she loves to dig holes and I'm trying to train her not to because the landlord is getting mad at me for the holes.   I think she's learning, though.
Side note: Is my landlord insane?  Digging is kind of just what dogs do, isn't it?

Side note #2: I've discovered sundresses.  Well, sort of.  I know, GASP, I'm wearing a dress.  Actually, everything I'm wearing here is my sisters.  The dress is a hand-me-down and the boots weren't, but she's not getting them back.
It was way too hot and humid for anything but this dress.  Which, as it turns out, is really comfy.  Of course it had to be warn with cowboy boots, because, if I'm going to be wearing a dress, believe me, it's either with boots or converse.  (I don't even like the way dresses look with heels!) Nope.  Obviously I like 'em better with cowboy boots, dirty knees, the family dog, and an eighty year old tennis ball.
Dog and I are definitely enjoying summer!  I'm pretty sure I have more freckles than cells in my body at this point.
Oh, and happy July!
